The PS3 Slim is 33% smaller and 36% lighter than it's predecessor, the "old" PS3. It also sports a 120GB HDD which is amazing considering the size of it. The PS3 Slim is powered by a new 45nm version of the Cell processor, which runs at the same speed as the 60nm processor in the "old" PS3 but is smaller and more energy efficient which also means it is quieter. It also has built-in Wi-Fi and two USB ports.

On top of all that it can be yours for free. Check out the "How It Works" section below to learn how.

How It Works

To get your PS3 Slim there are three simple and easy steps. Register, Refer, Receive.

The concept is pretty easy to understand once explained to you. Hopefully after reading this you will have a better understanding off how the referral websites work and how they can afford to give away a PS3 Slim. Read on...

register refer receive

Register: First off all you must register with the referral site. You can do this by clicking here to get your Free PS3 Slim. Then you must complete an offer. This is the part that usually puts people off but read on, the Intuit and Lovefilm offers are both FREE trials, so they will cost you absolutely nothing.

Refer: Then you must refer 11 friends or family.

Receive: Finally you receive your PS3 Slim. The referral site even pays for the postage. It usually takes no more than a week to arrive.

Now you're probably wondering how the referral site can afford to give away a PS3 Slim for free.

Here's how it works:

  1. You register with the referral site
  2. They give you your unique referral link that you use to refer friends/family
  3. You complete one offer
  4. The referral site gets paid from the advertiser
  5. You refer 11 friends/family to do the same through your link
  6. You then receive your PS3 Slim

So say for example you complete the Free Lovefilm offer, the referral site then gets paid £20, and for every person you get to register and complete the Free Intuit or Lovefilm Offer, the referral site gets paid another £20.

This is called Affiliate Marketing. Lovefilm are gaining potential long-term customers and it's a cheap way of advertising for them. The referral site is making a lot of money and you get your PS3 Slim.

Frequently Asked Questions

If there's still something you're not sure about hopefully you can find the answer below. Below are the most frequently asked questions:

What is a referral?
A referral is someone who signs up through your link and completes an offer.

Do you really pay nothing?
Yes, if you complete a free offer it costs nothing. There are no other hidden costs involved.

Can you sign up with multiple accounts?
You cannot sign up to the referral site more than once. And your family members cannot sign up from the same computer so be careful not to do this as it is against the T&Cs of the referral site.

How long does the PS3 Slim take to arrive?
It takes about a week to arrive.

Will I receive any spam form the referral site?

No, they do not send you any spam. Your email is only used to activate your account when you sign up.

What happens when I get all of the referrals for my PS3 Slim?

You submit your account to get verified and then you can place your order.

What does it mean when it says my account is being verified?
They are checking to make sure you haven't broke any of the T&Cs.

Which is the best offer to complete?
The Intuit or Lovefilm offers are recommended because they are both free trials, so they cost nothing.

What does it mean when it says a referral is pending?
It means your referral has signed up to an offer and it goes to a pending status until they fully complete it. For example if they complete the Lovefilm offer the status changes to pending until they rent 1 dvd which is required to complete that offer.

Someone I know completed an offer but it didn't show up on my account?
This doesn't happen too often but from time to time offers don't track properly. Simply get them to submit a support ticket with proof they completed the offer and it will get resolved.

What is a support ticket?
If you need to ask the referral site any questions you must create a support ticket. This can be done by going to the support section on the referral site. Expect a response within 24 hours in most cases.

Sony again mentions “monthly fees” in relation to PSN [Source]

SCE technology platform boss Masayuki Chatani has told Nikkei that Sony will “face difficulties” if it continues to rely on the “sell-and forget model”.

“Servers and the like have running costs… after we sell the hardware, though, we continue to sell products such as content and services,” he said.

“We expect to see considerable growth in digital content, such as game download services, avatar items and the like.

“We can also accept payment in a growing number of ways.

“In addition to single-payment packaged software, there are also schemes like monthly fees or per-item charges. I think this variety of payment methods will bring about a diverse range of playing methods, too.”

Monthly fees, eh? Sony said in a presentation recently that subs were on the way to PSN, but SCE boss Kaz Hirai quickly assured that PS3 network play is to remain free.

PS3 Slim Could Have Been Smaller [Source]

The PS3 Slim was a decent attempt at reducing both the size, and the cost, of the original PlayStation 3. But did you know Sony were considering making some more drastic changes?

In an interview with Nikkei, SCE's Masayuki Chatani, from the company's strategy planning department, has revealed that not only were Sony looking at making the Slim even smaller, but that they were looking at some fairly radical solutions to the problems of HDD sizing.

One of those was to use flash memory instead of the conventional HDD the PS3 currently uses, which would have cut down on the size, running costs and even noise levels of the console.

Another was to leave local storage out of the equation altogether, and instead rely on the PlayStation Network to save all of a user's game data, personal files and settings (similar to how Gmail works, for example).

Chatani says Sony "considered both options", but in the end, "felt that the price would be too high for the amount of storage capacity the PS3 needs", so they stuck with a conventional HDD.

He also says, when comparing the Slim with the PS2's redesign - a model that made far more drastic cuts to the dimensions of the console than the Slim has managed - that reducing the size of the PS3 even further was a possibility, but that in order to do so, the machine's power supply would have to have been made external (as it was on the PS2 Slim), which "would have imposed restrictions on transport and use, making it harder to use freely."

250GB PS3 Slim Uncharted 2 bundle is real thing [Source]

Based on the an FCC listing spotted awhile back, we should have saw this one coming - there's a PlayStation 3 Slim with a built in 250GB hard drive coming to retail sooner, rather than later.

The unit will be bundled with Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2, which is a game that we suspect will be both good and popular. Smart move on Sony's part, if you ask us. As this leak is simply based on an image, things like release date and price are currently unknown, but we'd guess we'll be learning more soon.

Anyone glad they waited to pick up a slim PS3?

PS3 Slim Beating Lower Priced Xbox 360 Elite [Source]

Late last night Microsoft's recently announced price drop for the Xbox 360 Elite to $299 and Pro model to $249 took effect and retailers immediately adjusted the price accordingly. Unlike the PS3 Slim price cut, buyers do not appear to be snatching up Xbox 360 Elite's at a fervent pace.

When the PS3 Slim went on sale at online retailer Amazon.com, it immediately shot up to the number one sales spot on Amazon's hourly bestsellers list for video games. It has remained fixed in that spot now for 10 days running.

Now that the new Xbox 360 pricing is in full effect you would think everyone waiting to grab one would have shot it up the sales chart. Not so. In fact, PS3 Slim remains in the number one position this morning while Xbox 360 Elite sits at the #25 spot.

And that is the Halo 2 and Fable 3 Elite bundle which also saw its price dropped to $299. Clearly this is the better value over PS3. Or is it?

There are a number of potential reasons why Microsoft's price drop is not having the same effect on sales as the PS3 Slim. The Xbox 360 Elite was introduced well over a year ago while the PS3 Slim is technically a new design with some small tweaks consumers had been asking for. People like new. Advantage: PS3 Slim.

For movies, PS3 Slim includes a full blown Blu-ray Disc player with all the bells and whistles only some standalone players are packaged with. Xbox 360 Elite has Netflix streaming. Advantage: PS3 Slim.

The PS3 Slim went up for pre-order sale nearly two weeks before Xbox 360 Elite at its new price. Someone on the fence for a next-gen console might have pulled the trigger immediately at the PS3 Slim introduction. Advantage: PS3 Slim.

And lastly, there are far more Xbox 360 consoles already in homes than any model of Playstation 3. This is the first time in the console cycle that a comparable PS3 and Xbox 360 model are going head-to-head at an identical price. Fewer PS3s already in homes translates to more potential buyers. Advantage: PS3 Slim.

It will be interesting to watch sales numbers through the holiday season. Sony, which as been stuck in third place since Playstation 3 was introduced, has a legitimate shot at overtaking Microsoft and Nintendo with next-gen hardware sales.

Do you think PS3 Slim will be the hot gaming console gift this holiday season?

Best Buy Offering Free Games To Prevent PS3 Slim Trade-Ins [Source]

With the Playstation 3 Slim starting to show up at Best Buys around the country, the national retailer has kicked off a plan to try and cut down on the number of people returning a recent PS3 for the newer PS3 Slim, sources tell Kotaku.

An internal memo, verified independently by a number of employees at different stores, shows that Best Buy is offering people who come into the store to exchange recently purchased Playstation 3's for the newly released PS3 Slim a choice of a free Playstation 3 title and price match in lieu of the new slimmer, larger-hard-drive sporting console.

Due to the interest in the new Slim model, the memo warns, stores may see people trying to return their console for the newer model. Before doing the exchange, a store is allowed to offer a choice of a free copy of Infamous, MLB 09 The Show or Killzone 2. Not a bad selection, but is it worth more than the smaller footprint and bigger hard drive?

It's important to note that this isn't an advertised sale, it's an internal memo. So it may be up to the store manager's discretion how often to offer the deal. I'd also assume that this would only hold for Playstation 3's purchased within the past 30 days and with a valid receipt.

We've contacted Sony and Best Buy for confirmation. If this is true, I think it's just further evidence of a console war heating up to deliver plenty of great deals for gamers on both sides of the fence.

What Does Microsoft Have To Say About The PS3 Slim? [Source]

Sony are pretty chuffed with the new PS3 Slim. But what does Microsoft think? We asked them.

The PS3 will be $499 from next week and available in the new Slim edition the week after. This puts it right in the same price bracket as the Xbox 360 Elite, bringing into question the 360’s value for money when you consider it doesn’t have a Blu-ray drive (or built-in wi-fi).

Unsurprisingly, the spokesperson from Xbox Australia who responded to our request for comment on Sony’s announcement doesn’t think price is a major factor.

“Consumers, while looking at price as a purchase consideration, are after an experience that comes from getting their hands on compelling content when weighing up the best value option. Starting at $299, there’s a lot of great content exclusively on Xbox 360. Check out our exclusive games (like Halo ODST, Forza 3, Lips Number One Hits, Left for Dead 2, GTAIV Episode 2 and Shadow Complex to name a few), Xbox Movies on Demand, Facebook & Twitter. It’s all arriving before Christmas this year and gives our consumers even more reasons to use their console. We’re focused on extending the life of the console through the games and entertainment we deliver – not just the console hardware. It’s the reason why in 2009 we’re the fastest growing console in Australia.”

Sure, the Arcade is still much cheaper than a PS3 and there is something to be said for the Xbox approach of allowing consumers to only pay for what they want to use. Don’t want to go online? Don’t pay for it. Don’t want to watch Blu-ray? Don’t pay for it. Though the flip side is that if and when you do want those extras, you will end up paying a premium for them.

But it’s almost funny how closely this prepared statement resembles the type of comment we’ve been hearing from Sony until this week. This “console war” has just gotten a whole lot more competitive.

Why The PS3 Slim Has No Backwards Compatibility [Source]

Most of us have already figured the PS3 Slim will not be backwards compatible with the PS2 but there were many who still had their hopes up from the fact that it has been removed from later models of the PS3.

For most PS3 owners, this probably wouldn’t matter but none-the-less, there are still Sony fans who would be interested in this feature. I, myself enjoy playing old games once in a while, especially if I’m trying to pick up on a new sequel that I’ve never played before but would like to enjoy the previous releases.

If having backwards compatibility is a great deal to you, here’s an explanation from SCEA’s director of marketing John Koller:

“Now that we’re at a point where we’re three years into the lifecycle of the PS3,” he told us earlier today, “there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think — and noticed this from our research — that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]“.

“And it’s not just like 50 or 60 percent. It’s well into the 80 or 90 percentile range who are purchasing it for PS3 [games]. We do know that there are next gen consumers wanting to come over the the PS3. Most of those are consumers who have not utilized their PS2 for a little while and they’re ready to jump into the PlayStation 3.”

Disappointment, one extra console to waste space and collect dust.

PS3 Slim with retailers next week [Source]

ShopTo has confirmed to Eurogamer that PS3 Slim consoles will be available to buy well ahead of September.

Boss Igor Cipolletta told us stock will be delivered "middle or late next week", and ShopTo is offering a special pre-order price of £229.99 - 20 quid off.

Confirmation follows reports from the US, where Sony revealed that the 1st September PS3 Slim date announced at gamesom "isn't an official street date". "We expect most retailers to have 120GB PS3s by then," the spokesperson told Kotaku.

PS3 Slim Q&A with John Koller [Source]

SCEA Marketing Boss John Koller chats up GamePro about the new PS3 Slim. Will it be backward compatible? Is it worth the price? Will there be other price drops in the future? Patrick Shaw got the answers.

Patrick: So, you just wanna jump right into it?

John Koller: So, obviously, the big announcement is the price drop announcement, and that's effective immediately. The 80 GB [model] and the 160 GB [model] SKUs that we have on market now are going to be marked down as of right now. They're down to $299 and $399 respectively, and that's obviously something that's critical for us as we go forward in the fall.

And then, we're launching the 120 GB PlayStation 3 system on September 21st at $299; you're looking at a really tremendous value for the customer. Now, the 80 GB and 160 GB are going to sell down and go away. The 120 GB will be our "de facto" moving forward. But when you look at the really incredible line of content coming with the PS3, I think that... [when] you look at the software that's coming up -- Uncharted 2, Ratchet and Clank, and LittleBigPlanet Game of the Year; obviously on third-party side, there's Madden, Assassin's Creed, and Modern Warfare -- this is a huge lineup. Mirror that against the Blu-Ray content from our studio partners, the built-in Wi-Fi... the overall value of the PlayStation 3 for the consumer is substantial.

We just think that at the new price point, the value will be incredible and it'll be a very material, important rise in sales for the platform.

GP: This is a question a lot of our readers have had... They're wondering, will the PS3 Slim support Backwards Compatibility?

Koller: No, it won't, actually. Backwards Compatibility plans [are] actually off the table. But, we've noticed [not only] in all of our research, but [also] broadly speaking, we're in our third year now and most of the consumers that purchase the PS3 are purchasing it for PlayStation 3 games. So, those games... we're looking at 80 to 90 percent of consumers purchasing [the system] primarily for PS3 [games]. But, the next-gen intenders that are coming over to purchase the PS3 are purchasing it for the game content that's about to launch, primarily. There's a lot of consumers that are amped up on [forum] boards for Uncharted 2, just like we saw sales increasing from this launch.

GP: If you had to say, what's the main incentive for current PS3 owners to upgrade to the PS3 Slim?

Koller: That's a great question. I do think that, honestly, the functionality is the same. There's certainly design aspects that are very appealing on the new model. But certainly, the older model appeals to a certain demographic as well. But really, it's up to whatever they find most appealing. There's a few changes internally on the new system that may be more material for you in your background and not necessarily the readers, but there's a different size Cell chip that's going from 65 nanometers to 45 nanometers. There's a new cooling system and a new power system that has a third less [of a] power draw, so it's much more power efficient. That, with the new design -- it's a completely different model.

GP: What comes in the box when you purchase the console? Is it just the standard "console, one controller" type of deal?

Koller: Yeah, it's a "core unit". We're not going to be bundling it with games. At least, [not] initially.

GP: Will you still be able to swap out the internal hard drive?

Koller: You will. We actually actively encourage that, for consumers that want to. The hard drive bay has moved from the side to the front, so it's a simple two-screw process. You can unscrew it and put the new Terrabyte model or whatever you like in. Absolutely.

GP: Is it an issue that the 80 GB PS3 now costs $300, which is the same price as a Slim? And will there be another price drop somewhere down the line?

Koller: The 80 GB model is selling down, now. We think that we're gonna have a clean landing getting out of inventory very shortly on that. So, that's not going to be a big issue. We have pockets of inventory right now, but we've obivously been making a very conservative and strategic effort to sell that down as much as possible this whole summer and last spring to get to the point we're at now.

The 160 GB, we have pockets of inventory as well. That was a limited SKU by definition, so that's going to be out of market very soon as well. As for your price drop questions, let's get that today please! But, we obviously have a very proven legacy in terms of our business model. It's definitely different. Today, what you heard today as been in place since we've launched the PS3. We've had plans in place for this new model and the price drop, the strategic price point. I think that what you're seeing today is the result of that. We've been in the industry for a while. You've seen what we've done with the PS2, the PS One and the PSP. We are not reactionary. We make changes to the platform strategically when it hits that step. Today is that step.

We know that the customer coming in is going to be much more akin to purchasing the PS3 at this current price point. Like I said, we see material increase in sales.

GP: The PS3 Slim is now $50 more than the PSP Go. Do you think that there'll be a future price adjustment for the PSP Go?

Koller: The Go is under the same office as the PS3 and all of our platforms. We have a strategic plan in place. We knew the Go was coming quite some time ago, as well, and we planned for everything associated with the platform. It will be launching at $249. There's no changes to that.

For the target consumer for Go, that's a much different type of person. That price point is in the wheel now. If you look at where Apple is, if you look at some other competitors, cell phone and mobile products -- from a handheld perspective, that a good price, and one that I think, will make for really strong sales.

GP: Has Sony learned anything from the design and the slimming down of the PS2 and the PS One, that they applied to the PS3?

Koller: Well, yeah, we've been through this a few times, right? We know what it takes. The PS3's a little bit of a different beast, because the internal makeup is so much more substantial than the PS One and PS2. When you're looking at changing cooling systems and changing power supplies, it takes a little bit of a different engineering know-how than maybe, removing or shrinking down the PS One, for example. We did [that] many years ago, [along with] the PS2 Slim. There was some built-in knowledge, inherently. We have a number of very talented engineers that make this happen on the PS3.

GP: Does Sony have an official stance on all the leaked images we had, with the faux PS3 Slims and the PSP Go leak? Are they doing anything to prevent things like this from happening?

[Sony PR takes over the phone interview from Koller.]

Sony PR: We're obviously doing our best effort to keep things close, but this is such an exciting announcement. Keep in mind, it was a global announcement, so I think the fact that it launched late this morning... [it's] better than other situations we've been in, but we do our best efforts to do that.

PS3s Selling out already [Source]

With the confirmation of the PS3 Slim at GamesCom and news of a price drop for the original PS3 it seems this has sparked sales for the PS3 as they are already selling out in stores. You can read the full story here:

Sony have used this years GamesCom to announce the PS3 Slim. With all the rumors that were going about this comes as no suprise but some of the details may suprise you.

The new PS3 Slim is not only slimmer, infact 33 percent slimmer but is also 36 percent lighter and uses 34 percent less power. The most suprising details was the size of the hard drive, it comes with an amazing 120GB Hard Drive.

Iit will retail at £180 ($299) and will be released in the the first week of September worldwide. That price will also now apply to the original PS3. So if you were thinking of buying a PS3 nows the time to get your hands on it's little brother.
